Riverside is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Jacksonville. It has been voted as one of the country’s top 10 Great Neighborhoods because of it’s great history, charming boutiques, fabulous dining options, and plenty of antique shopping.

Located on the St. John’s River, Mandarin is a mostly residential neighborhood in Jacksonville with tons of shopping. Mandarin is characterized by its huge oak trees and boasts some of the best views of the river. This neighborhood has a rich history and once housed a river port for shipping oranges and other citrus fruit northward – this is where its name comes from!
Don’t miss the Mandarin Museum and Walter Jones Historical Park. It was founded in 1989 to address the loss of historical structures in Mandarin. The organization has restored buildings from the 19th century as well as the Mandarin boardwalk in 2000.
Because the area is highly residential, this makes it perfect for families. There are a number of large, highly rated schools, including Julington Creek Elementary School and Mandarin high school. This neighborhood is mostly car-dependent with minimal infrastructure for biking and transit, however it has some of the most gorgeous walks along the river.
For the family of outdoor enthusiasts, Westside is a great location for activities like hiking, camping, fishing, and boating. Located west of the St. John’s River, this neighborhood is known for larger lots and reasonable housing prices in more rural settings. If you’re looking to live farther from the bustling city, but still have it accessible for day trips, this is a good option.
The Westside of Jacksonville is also home to one of the best equestrian centers on the East coast, Jacksonville Equestrian Center, so it’s perfect for new or experienced equestrian enthusiasts looking for a larger plot of land.
Further northwest, the Jacksonville Baldwin Rail Trail is part of a federally initiated “Rails to Trails” program. It includes more than 30 miles of unpaved roads that traverse through the pine flatwoods. The trails are are available to hikers, horseback riders, and off-road cyclists.
On the west side of the river are also coveted neighborhoods Jacksonville Heights and Cedar Hills. Both areas have good elementary, middle, and high schools, provide some biking infrastructure as well as some transit, but are mostly car-dependent.
If you’re into unique nightlife, craft beer, and hip locals, Murray Hill is for you! Located between trendy Riverside and historic Avondale, this neighbourhood is a great mix of old and new. It has become the spot for young entrepreneurs to open innovative restaurants, boutiques, bottle shops and businesses. It’s an artsy local scene, perfect for working professionals, young couples, and families alike!
Murray Hill is home to charming bungalows and smaller homes, and is a short distance to the beach when you need a break from the hustle and bustle. It’s also located very close to the St. John’s River for easy access to beautiful trails and outdoor adventures.
The neighborhood has good walking and biking scores, with a considerable amount of infrastructure in place for pedestrians to engage with the local businesses.
Ruth N. Upson Elementary School is a highly-rated school in the area. In general, there are fewer schools in the area, but the walkability score makes it easy to access schools in surrounding neighborhoods.
